LEADER OR MANAGER?
Building on the work of Kouzes and Posner reported in their book, "The Leadership Challenge" and the John Kotter's writings on the difference between leading and managing, SEQUUS developed a comprehensive and popular workshop that explores this fundamental concept. the workshop is described in the "Learning Modules" section of this website.
To accompany the learning program, Sequus developed some diagnostic tools to help individuals get feedback on their behaviour. These tools are available online. Before you use them, here is the basic concept....
MANAGERS...
- PRESERVE THE EXISTING SYSTEM,
- DEVELOP PLANS AND BUDGETS,
- ORGANIZE TASKS AND ASSIGN WORK TO OTHERS,
- DIRECT, CONTROL AND SOLVE PROBLEMS ,
- EVALUATE OUTCOMES AGAINST PLAN, REWARD OR PUNISH...
the outcome of good management is usually order, stability and predictability.
LEADERS...
- CHALLENGE THE EXISTING SYSTEM
- ENLIST THE SUPPORT OF OTHER STAKEHOLDERS
- ENABLE STAFF WITH THE SKILLS & RESOURCES TO DO THEIR PART
- CHEERLEAD, ENCOURAGE AND CELEBRATE PROGRESS
the outcome of good leadership is usually change, but also risk and uncertainty.

AM I A 'LEADER' OR A 'MANAGER', "BOTH", "NEITHER"? GATHER SOME FEEDBACK.
Curious? It is possible to test your own preferences for 'leadership' or 'management' through the completion of a simple questionnaire. This questionnaire allows you to indicate the frequency with which you use specific behaviours, some associated with leading and others associated with managing.
To confirm (or challenge) your own perceptions, it is wise to get feedback from others who have experienced your leadership and management behaviours. The questionnaire allows you to do this by inviting at least three but preferably five others (subordinates, team members, co-workers, committee colleagues, or anyone else with whom you have a working relationship) to answer the same questions with you in mind.
A simple scoring and interpretation report allows you to examine the results and make plans to change your behaviour if you feel that your profile doesn't fit the demands of your job or mesh with your career aspirations. To view a sample of a report on a fictitious character click here.
